Sheikh Farid was the first Punjabi poet of Sufism who initiated an original and distinct stream of poetry in the Land of Five rivers, called Sufi Kavya-Dhara of Punjabi. His concept  of God and religion was neither traditional nor orthodox.
His supreme aim in life was to inspire love and affection in the hearts of the people.

Sheikh Farid composed his devotional songs in 12th & 13th centuries but Guru Nanak Dev was enamoured in the 15th century when he happened to hear Farid's poetry. Guru Nanak Dev introduced Sheikh Farid to public of all hues by propagating his message of universality and fraternity.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib contains Bani of 6  Gurus, 15 Bhagats, 11 Bhatts and 3 Guru-Sikhs. Baba Sheikh Farid is the forerunner. His Bani comprises of two Shabads (hymns) in Rag Asa (page 488), two in Rag Suhi (page 794) and 112 Shaloks (couplets) (page 1377 to 1384).

Macauliffe's life sketch of Baba Farid, whom he calls 'the original Sheikh Farid', was based on four manuscripts (three Persian and one Urdu) which in days were 'preserved at the shrine of Pak Pattan'.
